Saline Procedures Bone Grafting

In order to qualify for dental implant placement, you need to have a sufficient amount of jaw bone. Without adequate bone density, it can be more challenging to anchor your implants securely in place. Bone grafting is a procedure that can regenerate jaw bone where you need it the most, making virtually any patient eligible for successful tooth replacement. At Saline Oral Facial & Dental Implant Surgery in the Ann Arbor area, we proudly offer bone grafting to help strengthen your jaw bone and prepare you for dental implant placement.

What to Expect During a Bone Graft

During your initial consultation, you will have a chance to meet one-on-one with your doctor in order to learn more about treatment options, as well as aftercare guidelines. Your doctor will also perform a physical examination of your teeth and jaws, verifying your candidacy for a safe, successful bone graft.

In some cases, we perform bone grafts at the same time as other procedures. Often, bone grafts are done at the same time as tooth extractions and dental implants, allowing us to preserve and build the bone necessary to place dental implants. In other situations, it may be necessary to do the bone graft as its own, standalone procedure. Either way, you will be provided with full anesthesia in order to ensure comfort and safety throughout the process.

Comfort and Recovery After Your Treatment

Following a bone graft, you can expect some tenderness and swelling for a couple of days. During this time, over-the-counter pain medications may be used to mitigate any symptoms you experience. We can also prescribe non-narcotic pain relievers as needed. Most patients are ready to resume their normal activities within two to three days.

When recovering from a bone graft, you may initially need to stick to soft foods and liquids, and to avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where you received the bone graft. You should feel ready to transition back to a normal diet in no more than a week’s time.
